Parking: parking lot adjacent to playground or park along Deckner
Cost: free
Age Range: supported sitter – 10 years
Ground Cover: wood mulch
Features: Large area with multiple play structures. A separate toddler area with 3 slides, climbing tunnel, and two other fairly mundane climbing structures. A large big kid play structure with lots of things to do – several slides, pendulum climbers, a rope walk, rock wall, twisty climbing pole, and a wobbly bridge. A large climbing structure is also available that includes an inverted V climber and a concave wall climber. Baby swings and big kid swings are also available.
Surrounding Park Area: Perkerson Park is a large park in the historic Capitol View area and has a lot of offer everybody. There are lots of green space to walk around, multiple tennis courts that are lighted, 2 baseball diamonds, several basketball courts, lots of pavilions scattered throughout the park, and a workout area for adults near the baseball diamonds. The trees in the area are mature trees, so there is lots of shade throughout the park (although not particularly over the playground).
Shade: There is no shade over the playground. Some of the structures have small areas of shade, but this is a large area with no trees.
Seating: No benches for adults. No picnic tables close to the playground.
Stroller/Wheelchair Access: No. While the area is flat in the playground area, unless you have an all-terrain stroller, it is very difficult to navigate the area with just a simple stroller due to the wood mulch.
Safety: The playground sits atop of a hill, so the back end of the play area has a retaining wall that is approximately 2 feet high. Being a mom, I could see, in my mind, kids running around the playground and falling off the wall. It just seemed a little weird to me. Also, the climbing structure is huge and just seemed more dangerous than other inverted V climbers than others I have seen.
Cons: This playground was riddled with litter. It must be an ongoing problem as there are several signs to pick up your litter and don’t leave a mess, but those warnings seem to do nothing. It seemed like every square foot on the playground has some sort of litter on it, which is just sad.
Overall Assessment: This is a large playground with separate areas for different age groups, which I just love. I absolutely hate it when toddlers are expected to play on the same structure as the big kids and this differences between the two structures were perfect. At Perkerson, the two structures are far enough away from each other to deter the little kids from getting on the big kid structure and vice versa. However, the trash issue is really a deterrence for me returning. It is just so sad when there is litter scattered everyone, especially when there are obvious (yes, obvious) trashcans right next to the area.
